New England Masters Skiing, Inc.
New
England Masters Skiing, Inc., (NEMS) is seeking a part-time Executive Director. After 19 years of exemplary service our Director is
retiring.
The
mission of NEMS is to
encourage, promote and support interest and participation in amateur alpine ski
racing, first at the Masters level and second at all levels. NEMS is affiliated with USSA.
NEMS is an organization of 150+
active members and over 400 members with whom we communicate on a regular
basis. Our annual race program consists
of approximately 20 scheduled alpine ski races with competitors ranging from
Class 12 (80+ years of age) to Class 1 (18-29 years of age). As part of the 20 race series we host some
legendary races in the East (NH, VT, and Maine) such as the Thomas Inneson
Memorial, at Bromley Mtn. Ski Area, the Gibson Cup at Mt. Cranmore, the Bunny
Bertram Race at Suicide Six, the Janeway Cup at Stratton Mountain, and the
Hochgebirge Cup at Cannon Mountain
(the oldest consecutively scheduled ski race in North America.). At the end of the season, the leading male
and female point winners claim the Sise Cup, an award that commemorates the ski
racing career of Al Sise, a long-time Masters racer.
The Executive Director reports to
the Board of Directors. Responsibilities
include (but may not be limited to):
1.
Developing an
event schedule and handling associated event logistics
2.
Promoting
increased NEMS participation
3.
Maintaining
financial & legal requirements of a non profit incorporated organization
4.
Communicating
efficiently and effectively with NEMS racers, the Board of Directors and the larger
skiing community
5.
Fund raising for
NEMS activities
6.
Working with
the Board of Directors to plan an annual program of work.
The part-time Executive Director
position includes a base salary, a partial stipend for health care, and
expenses. The Board of Directors will
consider a bonus opportunity based upon the Executive Director bringing to NEMS
new sponsors, new members, and/or new fund raising opportunities. Although the position is part-time and the
off season work schedule is quite flexible, the work during the race season is
more time sensitive and attendance at races is expected.

NEMS Executive Director Job Description –
Winter 2009
The Executive Director (ED) reports to the Board of Directors. The role of the Board is to determine the mission and to set and approve goals, policies, and the overall direction of NEMS, as well as approving the race schedule and sponsorship arrangements. The role of the ED is to execute the policies, while working to achieve the mission and goals set by the Board, including creating the race schedule and acquiring sponsorship.
The Board meets once in the spring and once in the fall, (when the attendance of the ED is required) and on occasion, if needed at other times. As the Board cannot make policy decisions without a quorum, the ED has a great deal of autonomy in carrying out the mission and goals. The ED should work closely with the President, and should communicate with the Board solely through the President, except at Board meetings which the ED attends. No individual Board members, except the President, may direct the activities of the ED, although Board members do work closely with the ED in the spirit of the fun of ski racing, and of our shared goals.
Duties include, but may not be limited to:
1. Scheduling and Logistics
- Develop a race schedule with input and final approval from the NEMS BOD
- Build and maintain strong relationships with host areas
- Provide race-day coordination between NEMS, the host location and racers
o Work with host locations and race secretaries to ensure first-rate events
o Transfer racer information for scoring purposes to host race secretary
o Remind “race coordinators” (normally BOD members) of their responsibilities at each race event.
o Transport bibs, awards, banners, capes, and other race day items
o Determine awards location, and procure awards
- Maintain and publicize racer standings throughout the season, and procure season’s end prizes for overall and class series winners
- USSA Level-2 TD rating desirable
2. Fund raising and promotion
- Aggressively identify and contact potential sponsors
- Develop an annual marketing plan for sponsorship
- Promote and advocate for sponsors at each hosted event
- Recognize sponsors at awards events
- Recommend to the BOD new ways to conduct fundraising
- Promote a plan and strategy for increasing membership and participation in the Sise Cup series and related events
3. Financial & Legal
- Work with the BOD to establish a budget, manage expenditures, and provide year-end annual accounting.
- File appropriate documents with IRS on time
- Keep historical files of minutes, race results, and correspondence
4. Communication
- Report on seasonal performance (# of racers, finances, satisfaction, etc.)
- Work with competitors, BOD, and race organizers to resolve issues and concerns
- Assist in maintaining and updating membership and correspondence lists
- Prepare newsletters (paper and electronic), web announcements and USSA publications.
- Represent NEMS at regional and national events.
6. Coordination
- Work with the NEMS Board of Directors in accordance with articles of Incorporation.
- Plan and prepare Board of Directors meeting agendas.
- Work with the Board to fill Board vacancies
- Work with board to implement program changes and improvements
- Keep track of and advise the BOD of its legal and record keeping responsibilities under the Articles of Incorporation
- Attend Meetings of the Board of Directors when invited and report on the status of items to be considered at the meeting
- Work closely and communicate regularly with the President and Vice President to keep them informed
